Taking
its toile
When toile de
Jouy fabric (often
simply called
toile, pronounced
twahl)
was first
made in the
French town of
Jouy-en-Josas in
the 18th century,
it featured
idyllic scenes
of the French
countryside,
with people at
work and play.
The pattern is
usually printed
in a single colour
such as black,
red or blue on a
white or off-white
background.
